Student Led Conference Reflection

The things I enjoyed most about my SLC were:
My mum was really impressed with my reading, because she thought I was bad at reading. Also my writing she thought would maybe be bellow but it was at my level and quite close to being year 9/10 standard.

What went well and why?
The things that went well were I didn't make any mistakes and i was able to explain everything.Furthermore I was able to quickly get into the conference even though i was late.

What were the challenges you faced when preparing and presenting your SLC?
The most challenging thing was the teacher wasn't there to correct or help me most of the time(basically the whole time).

What changes would you make for next time and why?
I would give more examples because they did understand and i did explain well, but I didn't show too much examples.

Year 7/8 Standard: Assessment task

WALT: I can use a use a wide range of comprehension strategies to understand text such as: - using their prior knowledge, along with information in the text, to interpret abstract ideas, complex plots, and sophisticated themes - gathering, evaluating, and synthesising information across a small range of texts - identifying and resolving issues that come from competing information in texts
Complete both texts and write the answers in your own words.
TASK 1 - read the text about Sneakairs

TEXT: EasyJet's Smart "Sneakairs" Makes Sightseeing Effortless

What I already know about navigating with maps?
  • When you're using a map you need to know where you are on the map.
  • Some cars have GPS that tell you to go.
  • You can go on google maps on your phone/device.
Who created “Senakairs?”?
Easy jet
How do the “Sneakairs” work?
  • Enter where you want to go and every time you have to change direction it vibrates that foot.
How do “Sneakairs” help tourists visiting a new city or town?
  • You don't have to always stare at the phone.
  • You can see the view.
What challenge does easyJet need to overcome before “Sneakairs” can go mainstream?
  • They have only 3 hour battery life.
Can you think of any other uses for smart shoes like Sneakairs? - (give at least 2)
  • Make the shoes play music.
  • Make a foot massage button on the shoes or something.
Can you think of a better invention than Sneakairs to help us navigate places? Why is that invention better than Sneakairs?
  • Shoes that maybe just say when to turn cause you can get surprised to much when the shoes vibrate.

TASK 2: The purpose of this task is to identify details that support a main idea.
A main idea that the author David Hill often explores is: New Zealand's natural environment, and how awesome (impressive and amazing) and powerful it can be.
Read the following passages from pages 7, 8 and 9 of "The Sleeper Wakes" by David Hill.
a) Find details in the text that support this main idea. Underline these details.
b) Think about what the 'sleeper' is, and how it would 'wake' up. Highlight details in the text that suggest this development.
Two girls stood with their parents by a car, watching him. So Corey tried to look cool and expert, and he started up the track behind his father.
The blunt pyramid of Mt Taranaki lifted into a blue winter sky. Snow softened the cliffs where lava had flowed, thousands of years ago. High up towards the summit, the ridge of The Lizard showed where more lava had crawled downwards before cooling and setting.
Corey lowered his gaze to the 4WD track twisting up the mountain's north-east flank. Packed grey and green trees rose on either side. After just ten metres, all sounds from the carpark faded away. Only the crunch of their boots broke the silence.
Three steps ahead, his Dad walked steadily. He wore a woollen hat and green Gortex jacket to keep out the June cold. Warwick Lockyer, Department of Conservation Field Officer; expert on Mt Taranaki; tramper and climber.
His father loved this mountain. He loved its silences and stories, the way it tested people. Corey felt the same way. Being up here was the greatest feeling in the world. Pity some other people couldn't see it that way.
* * *
After 30 minutes' climbing, they paused, took deep breaths, and gazed around. The trees were lower. Tangled, waist-high shrubs had taken over, crammed together for shelter, tops flattened by the wind. In summer, white and yellow flowers blazed here, flowers that grew nowhere else in the world. Now everything huddled beneath winter snow.
Far below, the towns glinted like little grey models – New Plymouth, Inglewood, Stratford. Off to the left, the Tasman Sea was a sheet of grey steel.
On the horizon, blue-and-white shapes shouldered upwards: the peaks of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, Tongariro. Corey thought of Riki, the other DoC Field Officer. From Riki, he'd heard how Mt Taranaki once stood beside those other volcanoes, fought with them for the love of beautiful Mt Pihanga, then marched away in anger after losing the fight. Hardly any Maori people lived along the line between Ruapehu and Mt Taranaki; they believe that one day, Taranaki would head back in the fire and smoke to find his love again.
Corey stood listening to the silence. A puff of wind slid past. A pebble, loosened by the morning sun probably, dropped from an icy bank nearby.
'Awesome day,' Corey said.
His father nodded. 'Pity Dean couldn't make it.'
Corey glanced up at the dazzling white summit. Dean was a volcanologist who monitored New Zealand's North Island volcanoes to see if any eruptions seemed likely. He came to visit two or three times a year, even though nothing ever happened on Mt Taranaki.
Corey's father was gazing upwards, too. He stretched, and grinned at his son. 'Come on, mate. We're sleepier than this mountain.'

Jeff

As the sun rose the early birds perched, briiiing! Jeff quickly sat up and pressed snooze on his old 1700 saga( old touch screen phone).Jeff hopped out of his old, wooden bed and changed his clothes.Jeff was a 16 year old boy that liked to study,he lived in Auckland and his dad went to work at dawn and his mum like to continue to sleep in the morning, so he was always alone.Jeff quickly ate breakfast and headed off to school.

Jeff stopped at the steel gate.As Jeff entered he felt a series of feelings as he entered: nervousness, excitement and tension. Today Jeff was getting his test results And he hoped to get the highest scores like every other day, so he walked straight to class and hung his brown bag on the dull hook.As he entered Mr Dab greeted him "Good morning Jeff."Jeff quickly greeted him and strolled over to his desk and started scanning the class looking for the top five list, but when he saw the list he fell on his knees.

A pang of sorrow had filled Jeff's heart, he had realized his name was not on the list.Meanwhile, Juan(Jeff's best friend)had entered, but before Juan could even greet him Jeff had rushed out of through the football pitch, passed the school gates, and just like that Jeff had disappeared. The teachers quickly called Jeff's mother to call them and asked if Jeff had come home, but no one even had a clue where Jeff could be, after all he looked at the prank list. The teachers quickly called the police. The police listened to the story and decided to take this to the next level and dispatch every police in Auckland's police headquarters.

Jeff was still being searched for and still no one had a clue where Jeff was.One day Juan was searching for Jeff, he ended up walking through this small alley way and there seemed to be a turn at the end, so he turned and then, THUMP!Juan starred at this sight and yelled, what Juan saw was Jeff's dead body hanged on a rope.Luckily Juan had a lighter with him so he quickly burnt Jeff's body so he could be in piece, and just like that Jeff had completely vanished.

I can describe the structure of a Short Story

Something I have learned about the structure of short stories is:They always have a problem.

After reading some short stories two things I will remember when I write my own short story to have an outcome and to have a beginning, middle and an end.

Maths term 1 statistics investigation

WALT:Plan and conduct surveys and experience using the statistical enquiry cycle.

For the last couple of weeks Ryan and I have been working on gathering peoples opinions on where they like to sit, so we can make a graph with the information. In this screen shot you can see the graph of the results and the percentage of who likes which zone. The percentage of people that voted for other was 29.4% and whanau zone had the least percentage which is 7.4%.
Our SOLO level achieved was Extended-Abstract because I think we collected data efficiently.

Our next step is to conduct a higher level investigation.

Term 1 Integrated Learning - Leadership

We have been learning all about What makes a good leader.

We identified that good leaders show 6 main character traits. These are motivation, integrity, active thinking, trustworthy, goal focused, and resilient.

The leadership trait that I think I show the most its active thinking because I have been noticed doing this disposition the most.

The leadership trait I would most like to develop is resilience because I think that I am not too resilient like when I start something I don't always finish it because when it gets too hard I start to get really annoyed and I start to randomly answer questions.

Something NEW I have learned about leadership is that leadership was a skill to influence/motivate someone to achieve a goal, I didn't know this because I always thought the leader just led and had a lot of pressure on them.

The SOLO level that I reached during this unit of learning is extended abstract, because I think I can evaluate ideas well.

My next step in learning about leadership is to apply everything that I have learned about leadership to my own leadership roles.
